The Republican Mormon Hymn - 'We Thank Thee Oh God for a Profit'

1. We thank thee, O God, for a profit
To guide us in these latter days.
We thank thee for sending the free market
To lighten our minds with its rays.
We thank thee for capitalism
Bestowed by thy bounteous hand.
We feel it a pleasure to serve it
And love to obey its command.

2. When dark clouds of socialism hang o’er us
And threaten our peace to destroy,
There is hope smiling brightly before us,
And we know that deliv’rance is nigh.
We doubt not free trade nor its goodness.
We’ve proved it in days that are past.
The wicked who fight against Wall Street
Will surely be smitten at last.

3. We’ll sing of its goodness and mercy.
We’ll praise it by day and by night,
Rejoice in its glorious markets,
And bask in its life-giving light.
Thus on to self-interest
The honest republicans will go,
While they who reject capitalism
Shall never such happiness know.

**Accompanying scriptures:

Matthew 22:
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love capitalism with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love the free market as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Matthew 25:
34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed republicans, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
35 For I was an hungred, and ye told me to get a job: I was thirsty, and ye demanded compensation: I was a stranger, and ye deported me:
36 Naked, and ye fired me: I was sick, and ye told me to get insurance: I was in prison, and ye tortured me.
37 Then shall the republicans answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and told thee to get a job? or thirsty, and demanded compensation?
38 When saw we thee a stranger, and deported? or naked, and fired thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and tortured thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

  1. Loyd, that was great. I'm interested in using a portion of it in a place where I think it will fit in nicely. You'll get credit for it. Please send me an e-mail to thefaithfuldissident at gmail dot com if you're intrigued. :)

  3. The troll (alot) comments again.

"lets be honest about what is going on - anyone in america, legal or not, can get health care; for free even"

    well that's simply a lie.

"if one is forced to pay for your health insurance . . . , how is that helping the individual to become charitable?"

It's not. It's helping somebody who needs medical care get it.

  5. "Your telling me that if someone walks into an ER they won't be taken care of??? Is this not health care??? explain how it's a lie if you can"

They won't get it free. They will be billed for it. The emergency room isn't free. It's far from it.

"Everyone in America can receive health care. This is about insurance. President Obama has even acknowledge as much by changing his own rhetoric about the issue."

The only rhetoric that has changed is Obama's unfortunate shift away from pushing the public option.

"if this isn't about charity and only about somebody getting medical care, there are plenty of ER's and Free clinics. I support them both personal, I assume you don't because it's someone else's job (like the government). Who's taking care of them now?"

You are apparently ignorant about how ER's and clinics work. How about you educate yourself a bit before you comment on my blog.

Who are you anyways? Why always comment behind the cowardice of anonymity?

It really is pointless to try and "debate" with Loyd. I remember one time at work he was all upset about what early American settlers did to the native Americans. In the same conversation, not 5 minutes later, when someone brought up the atrocities that Saddam Hussein had committed against his own people Loyd said "That was like 15 years ago, get over it!".

I've found Loyd to be just like most every other person, extremely passionate about what he thinks is important. I'm extremely passionate about my points of view and I have all the scripture, class learning, and life experience to back it up. Even though we disagree on many things, I have a lot of respect for Loyd, he's a good man.

I tend to think Loyd goes way overboard, but that's my opinion. I'm a believer in the free market and the invisible hand, but that's my belief. I think Loyd could do a much better job on his blog in presenting his opinions and points of view - but those are my thoughts and it's HIS blog, HIS opinions, and HIS point of view.

A couple thoughts for both of you:

"A man convinced against his will; is of the same opinion still"

"Never forget that facts are important but it's the opinion of the facts that causes comment"

  11. Ryan,

I don't remember that conversation, but I'm dazzled that you can't see the logical differences in those conversations.

First of all, I would have never had said "get over it" concerning the atrocities Saddam committed on his own citizens. You should know me better than that. Second, my pointing out the 15 years (though I probably would have said 12 years) would have been in response to the ignorant claim made by war-supporters that Saddam was an immediate PRESENT threat to his citizens because of some of his PAST actions. In other words, I was criticizing the common (Hannity-loving) claim that we needed to go into Iraw because he had done some terrible things to his citizens. Of course this conversation would probably have all occurred within the context of more discussions about the lack of WMDs, the lack of a connection between Saddam and Al Qaida, the illegality of the war, the massive civilian deaths (at that time around 55,000+) that resulted from our invasion and occupation.

Again, I don't remember the specific discussion, but as I had the same conversation on dozens of occasions, it would have run in the same manner.

Your claim that I said "Get over it" is simply false. I would never utter such nonsense. Your recollection is simply misguided. Rather than saying that Saddam's past evils were of no significance, I would have been merely pointing out that PAST actions could not be appealed to in an attempt to show a PRESENT threat.

On a side note, I was watching a documentary last night about health care that followed a family whose child was born premature. Luckily the father worked for Microsoft and the company's own medical plan paid for the $1,000,000+ bill. It made me think of you and your fam and I hope you are doing well.

  12. I marvel at this idea that offering a public option or a government option or a more affordable option of health care is considered FORCING people to be charitable. I think then we should get rid of medicaid (the old people medicine) or is it medicare? i get confused by the names. regardless, we should get rid of old people medicine becuase clearly the young and insured are being forced to pay for old sick peoples health care. I mean really! death panels and all and we are still offering old people medical care! seems so hypocritcal.

Also along the same lines of being FORCED to do what is right...Did you know that the federal government had to force several states to integrate their schools, their public transportation, their private institutions etc. Yeah. My own state LA, and many of those surrounding me, Mississippi, Alabama etc were fored to give african americans their constitutional rights. I suppose that was wrong to do. We should have allowed those states to continue segregation instead of FORCING them to do what was legally and morally right.

Did you know that every day dead beat dads and moms are FORCED to pay child support. Yeah, the government takes the money out of their check before they even have a chance to cash it or direct deposit it etc. How dare they FORCE someone to be responsible for their children, especially when the parent never wanted that kid, never loved the mother, doesn't even want to be a part of the childs life. Why should they be FORCED to pay!

And then there are the numerous wars and operations and CIA and FBI and Homeland security nonsense that I do not agree with, and yet I am required to pay my taxes. I am required to support activities that I find immoral and wrong. Yes I could decide to not pay my income tax, like Wesly Snipes, and then face court, loss of my property, garnishment of wages, prison time. And not to mention many people would label me "Un American" or a "Traitor".

Yes, yes, we are compelled by reason or force to do what others in power think is right or necessary...that is life, that is power, that is authority. We can not escape that, no matter how much it erks us.

So while you may feel you are being forced to provide people with disease prevention, and life saving medicines, and prenatal care for their child, or medicine for their child or ailing grandmother at least you can sit back in the fact that you were FORCED to SAVE LIVES while I feel that I was FORCED to DESTORY LIVES!

It is difficult to see the good in paying taxes to give people the chance to live a life free from ER's, free from medical bill bankruptcy, free from the fear of losing their home becuase they must buy their medicine. Yeah, doing good is a difficult thing to be FORCED to do. I feel your pain.
