ancient chinese proverb

give a man a fish and feed him for a day,
teach a man to fish and watch him starve to death because he can't afford a fishing pole and bait.

    Give a man a fish and then he's on welfare and wants you to give him a fish every day for the rest of his life.

    the point is that we need to feed the man and give him the necessary means for him to feed himself

    this post was a response to someone who was trying to argue that it is more important to give our time and talents than it is to give our money. i'm arguing that all three are necessary in order to truly help the poor and destitute

    Ok, but what if you don't actually have money? What if you have time and talents, but no money? (I'm not talking about me here, I have enough money to give to other. Completely hypothetical.)
