i give up. i was planning on keeping my MKH posts up on principles of honesty and free speech. i did not want to give in to others who wanted to tell me what i could and could not say. however, some people in power feel it is their right to track me down and use their positions to threaten me. i did not want to give in to this either. however, friends of mine who i care about may also be caught in the crossfires of their vengeance, and i do not want others to be potentially hurt because of me.
this has gotten too big and way beyond the scope of a mere satirical post made in jest. i don't want to deal with it anymore.

Can you elaborate more on what happened? This has got to be the stupidest thing ever. I understand protecting others and not wanting them to get hurt.

Yeah, elaborate more (seconding elmaddog), please. For all of the 1st amendment martyr talk, it seems like you pretty much took it down of your own accord. If you were truly threatened, call the police. If you meant 'threat' in a more rhetorical way, well, that's still too bad, but that's America. I mean, unless something truly shady went down, it seems like someone else just exercised their free speech rights to convince you to take it down.

In short, I'd say put it back up, and let the chips fall where they may...or don't whine about it.

no it doesn't. i can freely shoot myself in the head if i want. that does not mean that i can choose to do it without dying.
Nor does it mean you can say whatever you want without consequences. Free speech never removed those...
The fact that a public figure, who has chosen to make herself a public figure, gets upset about being held up to public scrutiny, especially satirical scrutiny, just proves she shouldn't be a public figure. People make fun of Laura Bush all the time for her deer-in-the-headlights appearance, and you don't see Laura Bush posting on every blog that mentions it. She knows that she's a public figure who can't help but be held up to public scrutiny. If she did react to every little thing said about her, it would cause people to talk even more because she would prove that what's said means something to her -- it would prove she was sensitive to the comments made. There's more than a few reasons why the "turn the other cheek" philosophy is useful, one of them being that sometimes you make an even bigger fool of yourself by reacting. And, in the end, what does it matter what anyone says about you? As long as you are comfortable with yourself it really shouldn't matter.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, what does it matter if some random blogger, with less than fifteen hits a day, blogs about you? What does it matter if some random blogger blogs about a public figure? What would bloggers have to blog about if they didn't blog about public figures?
